The 88 Best Alternative Rock Songs of 1998

30. Alanis Morissette – “Uninvited”

In 1998, it had been three years since the massive success of Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill, the album that put her on the map, and fans were eager for a follow-up. Before her fourth album Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, Morissette released “Uninvited” via the City of Angels soundtrack. And though the movie was quite forgettable—a schmaltzy remake of the Wim Wenders classic Wings of Desire—Morissette’s haunting piano ballad made an impression. The song begins with moody piano tinkling before swelling to an orchestral crescendo, heightening the ambiguous emotion of Morissette’s vocals. The track earned her two Grammys and a Golden Globe nod, and the soundtrack to the middling Nic Cage film went platinum several times over. —MS
