MTV VMAs: Gucci Mane Takes a Fashion Cue From Sufjan Stevens

It stands to reason that Gucci Mane would appear at an awards show (in this case, last night’s MTV Video Music Awards) in a Gucci jacket. Perhaps this detail of the 2018 VMAs wouldn’t have been very interesting at all if it hadn’t been for the fact that the Atlanta trap icon’s particular choice of Gucci jacket was the same as Sufjan Stevens at the 2018 Oscars. The very distinctive pink-and-white-striped piece, adorned with images of green koi fish, wasn’t just worn by Stevens sitting tucked away somewhere in the crowd and glimpsed during the occasional audience cutaway during the TV broadcast. Instead, the singer-songwriter notably performed his Oscar-nominated song “Mystery of Love” from last year’s Call Me By Your Name in it, with a backing band featuring St. Vincent and Moses Sumney.

Perhaps Guwop knew this, but just liked the jacket and/or the music of Sufjan Stevens. Perhaps he knew nothing of Sufjan Stevens and didn’t see his “Mystery of Love” performance. Perhaps he just didn’t care enough about the VMAs (see also: Pete Davidson) and/or Sufjan Stevens to not wear a jacket he liked. Check out a side-by-side comparison of Gucci and Sufe by music critic Craig Jenkins below.

Correction: An earlier version of this article included erroneous references to Sufjan Stevens’ “Grammys performance.” It was, in fact, worn during Stevens’ performance at the 2018 Oscars.
