Bruce Springsteen performed on the Tony Awards last night, after being awarded a Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre award for his work on his one-man show Springsteen on Broadway. He performed his solo piano and vocal version of Born in the U.S.A.‘s “My Hometown,” which features spoken-word narration. After being presented the Lifetime Achievement award by Billy Joel, Springsteen called being “a part of the Broadway community” “one of the most exciting things [he’d] ever experienced” and said “Thanks for making me feel so welcome on your block.” Robert DeNiro introduced Springsteen’s performance with a hearty “Fuck Trump” which caused the auditorium to erupt with applause. DeNiro also remarked on how hard it is to get tickets for Springsteen’s show and affectionately referred to it by his own chosen nickname “Jersey Boy.” Watch Springsteen play “My Hometown” and accept his Special Tony award below.
