Sunwatchers – “Silent Boogie”

SONY DSC

New York City based band Sunwatchers makes bracing, exploratory music that straddles the line between psych rock and free jazz. When I saw them in Brooklyn earlier this year, they covered an Alice Coltrane tune and turned it into a noisy, firebreathing beast. This week, they released the first single from their forthcoming second album II, which arrives February 2 via Trouble In Mind.

The song’s called “Silent Boogie,” and it marries feral Pharaoh Sanders sax to a chugging rock backbeat and copious amounts of distortion and wah-wah. I’m not sure what the “Silent” part is about, but it certainly boogies like hell. Hear it below.
