Michelle Williams Says She Suffered From Depression in Destiny’s Child: “It Got Really Bad”

Former Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams appeared on CBS’ The Talk yesterday to raise mental health awareness. Specifically, she spoke depth about her own struggles with depression while in the group. Williams noted that she didn’t quite recognize the illness as depression until she was in her 30s, and that she initially dismissed it as “growing pains.”

“For years, I’m in one of the top-selling female groups of all time suffering with depression,” she said. “When I disclosed it to our manager at the time. Bless his heart: He was like, ‘Ya’ll just signed a multi-million dollar deal, you’re about to go on tour, what do you have to be depressed about?’ So I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I’m just tired.'”

“It got really really bad…to the point of I was suicidal,” she continued. “I was to that place where it got so dark and heavy because sometimes you feel like ‘I’m the provider, I take care of people, I’m not supposed to be feeling this way. What do I do?’”
