On Instagram last night, Ryan Adams shared a video of himself recording a new song at Electric Lady Studios in New York City. Rather than traditional studio gear, Adams was using a Voice-O-Graph, a midcentury machine that records music straight to vinyl, with performers crammed inside a space the size of a phone booth.

As Pitchfork notes, Adams explained on Instagram that he plans to hide copies of the single in copies of an upcoming box set. Judging by the fidelity of recordings made on an equivalent machine at Jack White’s Third Man Studios–Neil Young’s A Letter Home, for instance–the audio on the Instagram version below, presumably captured by a smartphone mic, will likely be clearer than the final product.
