Video: A Tribe Called Quest – “We the People”

A Tribe Called Quest are in the midst of an amazing comeback. Their recently released sixth album, We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service, is quickly becoming one of the year’s most celebrated records, earning Tribe cover stories in the press and putting them on the path for their first No. 1 album in 20 years. Now, the hip-hop greats have shared a music video for “We the People,” a standout record that they recently played on Saturday Night Live.

The clip features every living member of Tribe—Q-Tip, Jarobi White, Ali Shaheed Muhammad—along with an animated, rapping mural of the group’s late MC, Phife Dawg. (Regular Tribe associates Busta Rhymes and Consequence appear as well.) In the video, Tribe are performing the track from an undisclosed location, rapping into an elaborate microphone setup that delivers their message over loudspeakers around New York City. “All you blacks, you must go / All you Mexicans, you must go / And all you poor folks, you must go,” goes the hook, “Muslims and gays, boy, we hate your ways / So all you bad folks, you must go.”

Needless to say, it’s a message that resonates deeply in the wake of Donald Trump’s election, and the closing image—thousands of protesters gathered in public, with signs reading “We the People”—is certainly a welcome one. Check out the video below.
