Report: Lady Gaga Will Play Donatella Versace in Third Season of American Crime Story

Lady Gaga will play singular fashion icon Donatella Versace in the forthcoming third season of American Crime Story, according to an Us Weekly source. (This is likely reliable info—Us Weekly‘s sources recently called Gaga’s headlining set at the Super Bowl.) Versace/Cunanan: American Crime Story will center around the sensational murder of Donatella’s brother, fashion house founder Gianni Versace, who was shot to death outside his Miami Beach mansion by serial killer Andrew Cunanan in 1997.

The casting choice is especially satisfying because Gaga and Donatella Versace are chummy in real life. Gaga wrote a song for 2013’s Artpop, “Donatella,” dedicated to the designer. She’s also appeared in two seasons of American Horror Story, which shares its executive producers with Crime Story.

The first season of American Crime Story re-created the O.J. Simpson murder trial; its second will address the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Premiere dates for the second and third seasons haven’t yet been announced. The Versace season promises to be full of glamour (’90s couture!) and potential scandal: Despite intense media speculation, Cunanan’s motive for targeting Gianni Versace has never been conclusively determined.

Listen to Lady Gaga’s “Donatella” and prepare yourself for this upcoming celebrity edition of celebrity doppelgänger below.
