New Music: The Flaming Lips – “The Castle”

Yesterday, beloved Tulsa cutups The Flaming Lips revealed details about their first album in two years, Oczy Mlody, which is due early next year. At midnight, they released its lead single, “The Castle,” which bears out the vague fantasy themes implied in the song titles. Sporting a relaxed groove in the “Yoshimi…Pt. 1” tradition, and a high, airy melody with airer lyrics (“Her eyes were butterflies/Her smile was a rainbow/Her hair was sunbeam waves…”), this is standard-issue Lips, but it’s not unpleasant. Enjoy the rollicking arpeggiators, and just let all that mushroom and dragon talk wash over you.
