On November 18, San Francisco singer-songwriter Jay Som—a.k.a. Melina Duterte—is reissuing her Bandcamp debut, Turn Into, via Polyvinyl Records. To celebrate, she’s released her first-ever music video, for “Ghost,” which premiered today at Rookie. In the clip, a solitary young woman tears apart photographs, then makes a mysterious discovery during a nighttime walk in the forest. It’s an appropriately intimate visualization of Duterte’s music, and a memorable image of the way the ghosts of our past selves can linger.
“To me, it’s like holding onto your memories and past,” Duterte told Rookie, describing the video. “They can be very vital for us, but they can hold us back. In the end, it’s about growth and acceptance.” Watch “Ghost” below, and revisit SPIN’s interview with Duterte.
