Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monáe Help President Obama Wish Daughter Malia a Happy Birthday

Last night, President Obama threw our nation one of its coolest birthday parties yet, a Fourth of July White House BBQ with special appearances from Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monáe. The event was primarily held to honor military heroes and their families, but its host had an ulterior motive: It was also the 18th (!!!) birthday of eldest daughter Malia, which he acknowledged — “Just because it’s the job of a father to embarrass his daughters” — with a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday,” assisted by Lamar and Monáe. (The proud papa still leads the singalong, though: Al Green he ain’t, but he more or less gets the pitch over home plate.)

Watch the rendition of the now-public-domain song here, and also see our president beam over his younger musician buddies: “Both amazing artists, talented and popular and doing great things.”
