Labeled with monikers ranging from “dream pop” to “indie prog,” Saint Motel’s set from the SPIN stage at Toyota Music Den sounded, with their mix of sax, trumpet, and organic percussion, something like a calypso B-side from Graceland-era Paul Simon. The L.A. quartet — A/J Jackson (voacls), Aaron Sharp (lead guitar), Dak Lerdamornpong (bass), and Greg Erwin (drums) — was a nice lead-in to start Day 1 at the Firefly Music Festival, with the young and energetic crowd getting into the groove immediately. A giant inflatable green turtle surfed throughout the Den, and the crowd was happy to join in a clap-along to “My Type,” off the band’s breakout eponymous 2014 EP.
