In 2013, North Carolina DIY duo elvis depressedly released the six-song EP holo pleasures, a collection of exquisitely bruised pop recordings whose arresting combinations of intimacy and distance — both sonically and emotionally — felt like experiencing a confessional unplugged performance with a slightly obscured view and a buzzing radiator behind you. This week, Mat Cothran and Delaney Mills are reissuing the fan-favorite release on Run For Cover, with six new tracks on the flip side, for a combined LP entitled holo pleasures / california dreamin’.
The half-dozen new cuts that represent the B-side are similarly captivating ballads from another room, delivering lyrical crystals like “I was taking Xanax / Listening to Morphine” and “I don’t want to be myself around anybody else” over tipsy organs, backwards guitar solos, and tired-sounding tambourine. It’s a delicate, queasy, and occasionally vicious set — the spiritual approximation of the space in between the after party and the morning after — and it flows from the earlier EP like a drink refill.
