Fear of Men Recast the Old With New Single, ‘Sane’

Brighton, U.K. dream-pop trio Fear of Men‘s forthcoming album, Fall Forever, boasts cover art that appears to be a computer-generated rendering of Bernini’s The Rape of Proserpina. Cast in preternaturally reflective gold, the early-17th-century sculpture takes on the look of an expertly crafted video game — so real and so shiny that there’s something a little uncanny about it. In similar fashion, Fear of Men have taken to updating their sound on their newest single, “Sane,” by using what appears at first listen to be weighty synthesizer production, but is actually heavily modeled guitar. As band member Daniel Falvey explains:

On this album we made a greater use of technology to re-imagine the sounds we could make with our instruments — most of what sounds like keyboards and synthesizers on “Sane” is actually guitar, so the song can be cold and controlled in the verses but have bursts of chaos and be very dynamic live. It’s our favorite song to play at the moment.

“Sane,” however, does not seek to deceive with opaque production: at its core, the song is a well-grounded, cinematic ballad, swelling with synth that may be simulated, but emotion that is undeniably real. Frontwoman Jessica Weiss tells SPIN, “It’s partly me watching myself going mad, partly declaring myself separate from the madness a relationship can drag you into.”

Listen to “Sane” below, and check out Fall Forever when it drops June 3 via Kanine Records.
