Patti Smith Joins U2 for Performances of ‘Gloria’ and ‘People Have the Power’ in Paris

Update: As speculated, Eagles of Death Metal did end up coming out onstage with U2 during their two-night stand in Paris. As Consequence of Sound points out, the band joined U2 for a cover of Patti Smith’s “People Have the Power,” on Monday night, which Smith herself performed the night before. Watch fan-shot footage here.

Though Eagles of Death Metal did not make an appearance at U2’s gig at AccorHotels Arena in Paris last night as previously reported, the latter band did bring out another special guest: legendary singer/songwriter Patti Smith. After a flag-brandishing performance of the band’s signature live number “Bad” (“This is a song about letting go of the past”), Bono called out for Patti to come out and sing the chorus to “Gloria” (hers, not theirs). She then stayed out to front the band on a run through her late-’80s anthem “People Have the Power.”

“Paris, je t’aime,” offered Smith at the end. Watch video of both songs here, and see a tweet photo below of the flag composed of victim names from the recent Paris attacks that the band displayed at their gig.
