GRRRL PRTY Pillow-Fight in Satin, Pearls, and Fur in the ‘Can I Live’ Video
Lizzo's all-female hip-hop collective gets late-night lit in a track from their joint EP with Bionik
It’s been a big couple of months, literally, for Lizzo: The Minneapolis rapper unleashes her sophomore LP (and SPIN’s album of the week) Big GRRRL Small World on Friday, and earlier in November she dropped her all-female hip-hop collective GRRRL PRTY’s electric joint-EP with producer Bionik (Aaliyah, Kool Keith), simply titled GRRRL PRTY X BIONIK.
With partner in rhyme Sophia Eris, local rapper Manchita, DJ Shannon Blowtorch, and hype woman Quinn Wilson — and Velvet Negroni, another alias for a staple of the local scene’s weirder intersections of rap and R&B, Jeremy Nutzman — she steps out in the decadent video for “Can I Live.” Directed by Wilson, Lizzo, and Asha Maura, the clip is simple but visually luxurious with fur coats, spilled feathers, and pearls everywhere appropriate for the track’s leisurely verses.
