Beverly Are Wary of a ‘Crooked Cop’ on Lush New Song

If Brooklyn dream-pop duo Beverly are great at one thing, it’s crafting aching, jingle-jangly tracks that could easily be placed on a mixtape for an unrequited crush. “Crooked Cop,” the first sampling of material from their in-the-works sophomore record, is no different.

Chiming in with a savory post-punk melody and easy mid-tempo rhythm, leader Drew Citron coos about a lover who, as the song’s title suggests, isn’t behaving how they should: “Every time I see you it still makes me sick with desire / But there are a few things that I just wouldn’t do for hire / And I tell you how I feel but I know you’re wearing a wire.”

“Sometimes it seems like cops can get away with anything,” Citron tells SPIN over email. “And that’s what it feels like to be led into the weeds by a crush. ‘Crooked Cop’ is about a deceitful relationship, and how hard it can be to get a handle on someone you love. It was a fun way to write a song that’s been written a million times — using cops.”

Listen to “Crooked Cop” below, and look for Beverly’s follow-up to last year’s Careers in Spring 2016. It’ll feature collaborators like producer Scott Rosenthal (The Beets, Crystal Stilts) and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart‘s Kip Berman.
