In a recent interview, R&B multi-hyphenate Timmy Thomas seemed pretty stoked that Drake built “Hotline Bling” around a sample of his otherwise mostly forgotten hit “Why Can’t We Live Together,” and well, you can only imagine what he’d think of DJDS‘ new edit of his original. Rather than just plucking up a bit of the instrumental, the duo of Jerome LOL and Samo Sound Boy take the track widescreen and eclectic, using a fuzzy sample of Thomas’ voice as the launching pad for one of their interstellar rave-ups — it’s a winning tribute to a song whose “damaged and eerie” delivery they see as akin to their own new music.
