Alex G’s ‘Kicker’ Calls Back to Indie Rock’s Salad Days

Alex G‘s seventh solo album Beach Music features the wunderkind songwriter stretching out a bit. We’ve already heard evidence of that on the pitch-warped “Bug” and the keyboard breeze of “Salt,” but new single “Kicker” finds him working in the mode he’s known best over the course of his cloistered homerecordings, blissed-out ’90s indebted guitar rock. The guitar work’s open-ended and Martsch-ian, despite his assurances that he’s not a big Built to Spill listener, and a great callback to indie’s salad days.
