Missy Elliott Returned to the Stage During Last Night’s Essence Festival
The iconic rapper was cut off by the venue after an hour, but was apologized to later by organizers
Lucky fans in New Orleans last night were treated to a very special — and increasingly rare — performance from recent Super Bowl Halftime show-stealer Missy Elliott during the city’s annual Essence Festival.
Steamrolling her way through hits like “Supa Dupa Fly,” “Get Ur Freak On,” and “Work It,” the recent birthday lady was cut off during “Holdin’ You Down” after playing for almost an hour, though she still managed to show off the skills that’ve turned her into one of the genre’s most longstanding icons.
“I’m sorry I was cut off,” she reportedly said onstage hours later, emerging after Usher’s night-ending set to explain what happened. “I came here to give 100 percent. I was cut off. I was disappointed. I thank you for coming out.” Check out some of Missy’s performance below.
