Screaming Females Bellow a Thrilling Cover of Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’

New Jersey punk act Screaming Females don’t exactly have the same style as country-turned-pop superstar Taylor Swift, but that’s what makes the group’s recent cover of the 1989 cut “Shake It Off” so fun. In their second appearance on the AV Club’s Undercover series (they covered Sheryl Crow last year), the trio strip away the high-flying production bells and whistles, replacing them instead with show-your-work drums and an impressive bass line. Frontwoman Marissa Paternoster’s vocals are a lot lower than Swift’s, and she gives off an air of nonchalant disinterest that earnestly seems to support the song’s message to just “shake it off.” Watch it here.
