Mastodon traded swampy Atlanta temperatures for the frigid north of Westeros Sunday night when the metal band made a cameo appearance in the eighth episode of this season of Game of Thrones. The group was invited to guest star in the chilling “Hardhome” by the show’s executive producer and metalhead Dan Weiss. Earlier this year, Mastodon contributed the eerie track “White Walker” to the GoT Mixtape called and as it turns out the song was a bit of terrifying foreshadowing. The three bandmates played a group of Free Folk, or “wildlings,” and *spoilers* as is pretty typical anyone on Game of Thrones, they are killed in a brutal fashion, this time at the hands of the mysterious wights and White Walkers that haunt the lands Beyond the Wall. Mastodon’s Brann Dailor was happy to meet such a bloody end:
It was such an incredible experience to be on set as extras for our collective favorite show Game Of Thrones and to be wildlings murdered and then brought back to life by White Walkers was beyond amazing. I watched my best friends Brent [Hinds] and Bill [Kelliher], murdered right in front of me as I myself was stabbed in the stomach and had my throat slit multiple times, and I didn’t mind at all. It made me love being in Mastodon even more. We are more than privileged and honored to have been a part of one of the greatest stories ever told on film, and the catering wasn’t bad either.
Mastodon aren’t the first musicians to make cameo appearances on the hit HBO show. Coldplay’s Will Champion and Sigur Rós have both appeared in Westeros, while the National and the Hold Steady have both contributed songs.
