Ice Cube to Reunite With MC Ren and DJ Yella to Perform N.W.A. Songs

The forthcoming N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton is set to hit theaters later this summer, and in the spirit of looking back at those salad days, Ice Cube has decided to get the band back together. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the rapper/actor revealed that he’d be performing as part of this month’s BET Experience in Los Angeles, and that he’d be bringing along his fellow N.W.A. alumni MC Ren and DJ Yella to perform a handful of tracks.

Ice Cube said that he hadn’t performed with Ren since 2000 or Yella since 1989, so this marks the first time all three will have taken the stage together in over 25 years. Dr. Dre, the reclusive businessman and other surviving member of the iconic rap group, is not set to participate in the event yet. But, as Ice Cube himself notes, “if you wish upon a star, you never know.” So start wishing and waiting because this show goes down on June 27 at L.A. Live.

But what’s more, Ice also hinted at the possibility that the trio could put together new music for the upcoming film. “We’re definitely dibbling and dabbling, so to speak,” he said. “It’s all about how great it comes out when you’re creating something. We can throw anything together; we can put rhymes and beats together easy. But our expectation level is so high, and if we meet our threshold, the world gets to hear what it is. If we don’t, we still need more time together to make it happen. It’s really some TLC, tender love and care, being put into these records. We’ll see what it is.”
