Sometimes, simple motifs are the most effective. That’s the case for the video for the up-and-coming crooner Shamir’s soulful track, “Darker,” from his upcoming debut album Ratchet. The Anthony Sylvester-directed short sees Shamir standing on a scenic desert mountain landscape in the middle of a dark, empty night. When he hits the high notes of the soaring chorus, however, the night instantly recedes, leaving Shamir standing in the warm and bright sun. The simple dichotomy is, surprisingly, much more moving than it has any right to be, but a large part of that comes from Shamir’s amazing voice.
