Elvis Costello Plays ‘Letterman’ for the 27th and Final Time

After 31 years in the host chair, David Letterman is leaving the Late Show in less than a month, so his final few musical guest slots have got to be coveted. It makes sense then, that some of his all-time favorites would be making a farewell appearance before he hands the reins over to Stephen Colbert. Last night, Elvis Costello made his 27th (and presumably final) appearance on Letterman; the iconic singer-songwriter was joined by smooth doo-wop trio the Quills, who helped Costello play a touching medley of his 1983 sweetheart single “Everyday I Write The Book” and Nick Lowe’s similarly named 1980 song “When I Write The Book.” Watch the send-off above, and prepare for Letterman’s last show, which will air on May 20.
