Dawn Richard Does the ‘Calypso’ in Futuristic New Video

Dawn Richard — that is, “D?WN” now — has a new video out for BlackHeart single “Calypso,” and it’s quite slick. Intercut with futuristic sequences of furiously grooving metallic humanoids (that wouldn’t look at all out of place in James Cameron’s Abyss), the Kytten Janae-directed clip also features a heavily braided and septum-pierced Richard simultaneously having what Ciara would almost certainly classify as a “Body Party.”

In a statement about the video, Richard said the following in a press release: “Calypso was a nymph in Greek mythology, who lived on the island of Ogygia, where she detained Odysseus for several years. We wanted to capture her essence in the video virtually.” She also mentioned the reason behind her new name, “D?WN”:  “I’m just letting go of my last name… It’s time.”
