Everybody is rightfully freaking out about the surprise release of Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly (which came a full week early), and now the “i” rapper’s frequent collaborator Flying Lotus is sharing some behind-the-scenes information about the LP. In a series of tweets early Monday morning, he explained that he helped give Lamar inspiration for the new LP. According to the tweets, Lamar came up with a concept for the album a few hours after FlyLo played him a bunch of beats he was working on for his next Captain Murphy project. If you’re at all familiar with the West Coast producer’s sound, the influence definitely shows.
Was helping out with @kendricklamar live visual show when he did the yeezus tour…

I was really surprised how he gave zero fucks about the media circus surrounding the tour. Was real low key trying to create, the whole time

I played him a folder of beats that I was keeping close for my next @xCaptainMurphyx project. Gave him all the beats like fuxk it.

Later that night he told me he had the concept for the album.
