Last year, Amherst’s California X filled headphones with snotty, power-punk-leaning thrash via their self-titled debut, a disc that dealt in sludgy guitar riffs and distortion-drenched vocals. On their new single, “Red Planet” (taken from their upcoming sophomore LP, Nights in the Dark), the Massachusetts quartet stick to their trade, serving up a mixture of slick-but-scruffy riffs, sneering vocals, and no-nonsense percussion. Stream the track above, and look out for California X’s Nights in the Dark, out January 13 via Don Giovanni Records.
