Taking a breather from asking the War on Drugs to suck his cock, Sun Kil Moon — a.k.a. Mark Kozelek — has released a nine-minute new track called “The Possum.” Orchestrated in his signature minimal strums, the Benji singer narrates a stream of consciousness resulting from watching a possum die on the sidewalk. Among other topics of discussion: spending time with Godflesh, for one.
Featuring light percussion from former Sonic Youth member Steve Shelley, “The Possum” is mainly a chance to stop and appreciate Kozelek’s expert handiwork. The onetime Red House Painter is barely audible through much of this single, but his beautiful harp-like guitar playing deserves some praise. Listen above and get “The Possum” on December 1 via Kozelek’s label, Caldo Verde.
