Charli XCX Shows a Softer Side on ‘Mockingjay’ Cut ‘Kingdom’

Lorde, Charli XCX

It’s been raining Hunger Games songs this month, and now we’ve got two more to share: First up, Charli XCX has teamed up with Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon on the piano-led “Kingdom,” and Lorde, who curated the entire movie’s soundtrack, has delivered a cover of Bright Eyes‘ 2011 single “Ladder Song.”

On the sparkling “Kingdom,” the British pop songstress displays the softer side of her personality, one we could totally get used to. Primarily known for her smart-mouthed, high-energy singles, Charli’s voice is in full-on ballad mode here, while Le Bon joins in only briefly, and just as softly.

Later on the soundtrack, Lorde — who actually recorded her Bright Eyes cover when she was 15 — sounds perfectly at home amid a delicately straining organ, which deviates just enough from the original’s prominent key strokes. Look out for the Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 soundtrack when it drops on November 18th via Republic.
