Ron Amstutz’s work has always lived on the border of photography, video and performance art; he builds elaborate physical worlds, documents them with his still-camera, and then turns these endeavors into films. For his Microsoft Connect Sessions collaboration with musician Ian Williams (of Battles), Amstutz added a layer that pushed the project’s abstraction even further: audio. Better yet, Williams’ soundtrack mimics Amstutz process, echoing the project’s natural origins (the light and shadows that beamed through the artist’s studio windows) and its filtration through the artistic ideal and through modern technologies. The resulting document is an abstract dance that lives between mediums of expression.
