Kendrick Lamar and Flying Lotus Go Deep (Really Deep) on ‘Never Catch Me’

A couple of Los Angeles’ best have teamed up, leaving us wondering why this pairing hasn’t happened sooner. Today we get an earful of Kendrick Lamar’s feature on Flying Lotus’ new album, You’re Dead!, for the psych-rap delight “Never Catch Me.” Therein, the good kid’s flow manages the feat of getting as equally out-there and twisted as the Brainfeeder boss’ wild composition. Provided you can get past the obnoxious drops from Power 106 and the “L.A. Leakers” who delivered the song late Tuesday night, you’ll find Lamar taking introspective liberties over FlyLo’s head-spinning production.

Lotus has already shared a couple of tastes leading up to You’re Dead!‘s October 7 release on Warp, including a collaboration with jazz genius Herbie Hancock and, before that, a video that teased his team-up with Snoop Dogg.

Meanwhile Lamar is facing legal issues today, Pitchfork reports, for allegedly using uncleared samples as the background music in “Rigamortis” from Lamar’s 2011 album Section.80. Sure, that was a while ago, but is another good reason he should have been working with Flying Lotus for years now.
