Last month, Neko Case and frequent collaborator Kelly Hogan released the song “These Aren’t the Droids,” which envisions a universe ruled by women, not teen boys with their love of “three-boobed aliens on stripper poles.” It’s a terrific sendup of both fanboy culture and the prevalance of misogyny in society, with some poignant lessons about treating women thrown in, such as, “A cougar is an animal. An animal that eats you whole and poops you out on a rock.” It’s all part of the all-star comedy charity compilation, 2776: A Musical Journey Through America’s Past, Present & Future, which also features Yo La Tengo, Aimee Mann, Ed Helms, Patton Oswalt, Andrew W.K., Aubrey Plaza, Reggie Watts, and many more.
Now, Case and Hogan have ratcheted up the hilarity with a video for the song in which they dress up as Star Wars and Trek icons, with Hogan as Chewbacca and Case as a hybrid Leia/Spock. It also stars Ellie Kemper, best known as Erin on The Office, as a woman trapped in an unhappy relationship with a stormtrooper who’d rather drink with his pals Darth Vader and Boba Fett than hang with her. Plus, there’s some footage of an adorable kitten thrown in, which really helps sell Case and Hogan’s vision of a woman-controlled world.
