Backstage Pass: No Age Talk Genre, DIY, and LL Cool J at BottleRock Fest
Randy Randall and Dean Spunt give SPIN a tour of the grounds on their golf cart
This year’s BottleRock Napa had one of the most unusual festival lineups we’ve ever seen, which is pretty much why we had to be there, cameras in hand to capture whatever happens when a couple of bona fide art punks like No Age perform just before Smash Mouth takes the stage. In fact, we caught up with the Los Angeles duo behind 2013’s excellent An Object LP shortly before they performed — surrounded by so much Northern California wine country — over the weekend. In speaking to guitarist Randy Randall and drummer Dean Spunt, we learned their own reasons for showing up (a similar mix of curiosity and fandom) and their thoughts on hanging out backstage (“It’s just a place to put your wallet and your keys”), plus gained insight on No Age’s recording process and learned a little bit about their DIY-loving families.
