In 'Glass Boys' Video, Fucked Up and Friends Share Why They Love Music

To coincide with the release of Fucked Up’s fourth studio album, Glass Boys, the Toronto sextet have released a grainy clip of short interviews featuring frontman Damian Abraham and a who’s who of indie friends. DIIV’s Zachary Cole Smith, Mac DeMarco, Parquet Courts’ Sean Yeaton, Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino, and others share why they started playing music (there’s also a cat wearing aviator shades, but he doesn’t say much). It’s sort of a behind-the-scenes counterpart to the LP’s trailer, a slow-motion chronicle of the band’s early history.

This time, the featured artists discuss their reasons for falling into music in the first place (literally for Sky Ferreira, who shows the camera a gnarly scar from tumbling down an elevator shaft), from quotes about Mozart (as was the case with Austra’s Katie Stelmanis) to birdsong, the first “music” Crass’ Penny Rimbaud loved. “When I was younger, I needed this music, otherwise I don’t know what I would have done,” says Abraham — who’s incidentally wearing the same “Philly Boy Roy” T-shirt he rocks in the video for “Sun Glass”, which celebrates the slightly less heavy things in life: ice cream and weed.

Glass Boys is out now on Matador.
