Back in March, a group of Virginians put together a crowdfunding campaign to bring Foo Fighters back to their city for the first time since 1998. Friday night, as Rolling Stone points out, the band responded on their Twitter account with a message that read “see you soon…let’s have a good time,” alongside a picture of the city’s flag.
Richmond resident Andrew Goldin launched a Crowdtilt Open campaign with the hopes that a successful round of fundraising just might convince Dave Grohl and co. to return to the River City. The campaign set a goal for selling 1,400 tickets at $50 each. Fans’ credit cards would only be charged if the entire concert sold out.
“Rather than waiting, and waiting and waiting for our favorite band to come to us, we’re making it happen,” Goldin said a mission statement when he launched the project.
As of Saturday morning, the campaign surpassed its stated goal of $70,000, thanks to the aid of two Richmond businesses, Brown’s Volkswagen and Sugar Shack Donuts, each of which donated 5,000. Just in case you’re in the area and didn’t jump on the opportunity to try to bring the band into town, each of those establishments intends to give away all the tickets they’re entitled to, so there’s still hope.
At this point, there’s no set date or venue for this show, but don’t be surprised if it happens at some point this fall, after Grohl has completed all the globetrotting for his new HBO show, Sonic Highways, and the recording of the Foos as-yet-untitled eighth studio LP.
