Watch Angel Olsen’s Turbulent ‘Hi-Five’ Performance on ‘Letterman’

Angel Olsen Hi Five Letterman Video

For SPIN’s March cover story, we caught up with the Chicago singer-songwriter Angel Olsen just before she was set to launch an extensive, country-spanning headlining tour, after the release of Burn Your Fire for No Witnessher first album recorded with a full band in tow. Now nearly three months later, that tour has made its way to Letterman, where Olsen and her fledgling band performed that record’s “Hi-Five.”

That track, which comes from one of our favorite albums of the year so far, is fairly subdued on record, but for her Letterman performance, Olsen chose to emphasize the stormy qualities at the song’s emotional core. Intense loneliness and sarcastic assent come here in the form of prickly electric guitars and the Windy City folkie’s reedy vocalizations.

You can watch the whole thing above or catch Olsen and her band at any of the dates on their ongoing tour, which extends through the end of August.
