In 1968, Elektra Records talent scout Danny Fields saw the Stooges play at the Michigan Union Ballroom in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He signed them. More recently, post-punk wrecking crew Protomartyr took the stage at the same spot to rip through their Michigan forebears’ “Down on the Street,” off the Stooges’ 1970 classic Fun House. The Under Color of Official Right group’s raw, raspy cover comes after the Mountain Goats coincidentally covered the Ramones’ tribute to Fields, “Danny Says,” for the same A.V. Club video series. And to think, now the Stooges might be releasing an album without frontman Iggy Pop…
