Marilyn Manson Debuts New Song in ‘Salem’ Title Credits

This past Sunday, WGN America premiered its new series Salem, which fictionalizes the 17th century witch trials closely associated with the colonial Massachusetts town of the same name. Now the network has let loose the show’s opening titles, which feature — because duh — a brand new song by Marilyn Manson.

The 45-year-old industrial-metal icon wrote the song with an assist from Salem’s in-house composer Tyler Bates (Californication, Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects), as The Hollywood Reporter points out. Dubbed “Cupid Carries a Gun,” the track features Manson’s creepy rasp over a mix of percussion and acoustic guitar that could keep pace with “Beautiful People” (or, you know, “Black Skinhead”).

“The song ‘Cupid Carries a Gun’ was the last track we just finished for my new album,” Manson told THR. “The occult and witchcraft [are] so often used in cinema with a heinous disregard for even researching its origins. However, I liked the themes of Salem. It looks at the witch trials without being cliche like most modern films.”

Like he says in the song, “Better pray for hell, not hallelujah.”

In other recent WGN news, as recently reported, Sigur Rós leader Jónsi and his partner Alex Somers are scoring another historical fiction series dubbed Manhattan, which is based on the events surrounding the Manhattan Project (are you seeing a theme here?). Also, Manson peer James Iha made the theme song for the new Hulu series Deadbeat.
