Watch Jel Crush the MPC in His ‘Steady’ Video

Jel Steady Video MPC Anticon Late Pass

Chicago-bred beatsmith Jel not only co-founded the influential Anticon collective and helped define their sound in the late ’90s, he pushed the art of live sample-playing to new heights. Above, you can witness the Berkeley-based artist at work on his MPC, pounding out a buzzing boom-bap crusher while repeating the mantra: “Keep it steady, even keel, keep it steady.” Recalling his early days with Themselves, the man born Jeffrey Logan spits a verse over the smashing drums and rattling atmosphere, then lets the immortal Eazy-E speak on his behalf: “I don’t give a fuck about fame.”

WC Tank directs the trippy clip for “Steady,” which hails from Jel’s out-now solo LP, Late Pass. We previously premiered the title track and the “Breathe” video. His inimitable touch has also been heard on recent works by Serengeti and, ahem, Kenny Dennis.
