Icona Pop and Ty Dolla $ign Host Bleary ‘It’s My Party’

Icona Pop, Ty Dolla $ign, "It's My Party," stream, single

Lesley Gore’s ’60s smash “It’s My Party” has enjoyed an odd sort of afterlife the past few years. Years before Robin Thicke was using up his 15 minutes with “Blurred Lines,” the Canadian smoothie was reworking the Gore song’s lyrical hook for the title track from his 2009 album Sex Therapy (“It’s your body…”). Drake, on the title track from his 2011 album Take Care, had his own update (“It’s my birthday, I’ll get high if I want to”). There are other examples, for sure.

Icona Pop’s new team-up with Ty Dolla $ign might be the most direct recasting yet of the “girl group”-era original. It’s still the “I Don’t Care” duo’s party, and they’ll still cry if they want to, but there’s a wastedness here Gore’s song never quite implied — the mix of thudding electronics and chant-like vocals brings to mind a ratchet-R&B version of Sleigh Bells. And then there’s Dolla $ign, ambling through choppy libidinousness, threatening to make “spray tan” the next #serfbort. The single is out today.
