Watch SoftSpot’s Crisp, Slow-Motion ‘Black Room Blues’ Video

softspot, black room blues, MASS

SoftSpot originally hail from the South and are currently based in Brooklyn, but the trio’s songs occupy a less definable space: somewhere nebulous between new age contentment and stormy art rock theatrics. On April 8, the band — singer-bassist Sarah Kinlaw, guitarist Bryan Keller Jr., and drummer Blaze Bateh (also a member of Athens, Georgia-bred outfit Bambara) — will self-release their sophomore album, MASS, an eight-track effort featuring two previously heard stunners (“You/Yours” and “King Porus”) and one just-revealed tune, “Black Room Blues,” which comes paired with a music video directed by Kinlaw herself.

As seen above, the clip matches the hesitant pacing of “Black Room Blues” with a set of slow-motion visuals. The video follows a group of older women who embark on a night of boozy catharsis, meaning red wine and dive-bar dancing abound. Filmed in Kinlaw and Keller’s home state of North Carolina, the mini-movie is also a family affair: Kinlaw’s mother and aunts play the leading ladies, and Keller’s father, uncle, and great uncle co-star as the bar band.
