Watch Quilt’s Free-Spirited ‘Tie Up the Tides’ Video

quilt, tie up the tides, held in splendor

Quilt first took shape while co-founders Anna Fox Rochinski and Shane Butler were students at Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts. “Our early days were really funny,” Rochinski told SPIN recently. “We knew how to play music, but we were goofy, weird art-school people in a band.” That art-school pedigree shines through in the psych-folkies’ latest music video, an abstract visual for “Tie Up the Tides,” the latest single from Quilt’s recently released Held in Splendor LP.

Directed and edited by Edward Greenberg and Ian Perlman, the clip sidesteps any kind of traditional narrative, and instead hangs together as a distillation of the trio’s shaggy, hippie-friendly aesthetic. “There is no me and there is no you,” Rochinski sings, rainbow colors and feathers swirling over her, Butler, and drummer John Andrews. As shots dissolve in and out of one another, one gets the sensation that she’s right: The band members — like all of us, really — are just different pieces of the same whole.
