Phantogram Conjure Sad ‘Bill Murray’ on Heartbreaking New Song

Phantogram Bill Murray Song Voices Album

Phantogram have already served up a trio of new songs from their upcoming second LP, Voices, and so far, the album looks to be full of intense, brooding synth-rock. There’s the shreddy “Nothing but Trouble,” the sultry “Fall in Love”, and the angsty “Black Out Days,” which all make the most of Sarah Barthels’ eerie, ethereal wails. Now the band is showing its softer side with “Bill Murray,” a ballad about loneliness that features none of the titular actor’s comedic charm.

“We named it ‘Bill Murray’ because we always pictured a sad Bill Murray for the visuals of that song,” guitarist Josh Carter told the Atlantic. “We want him to be in the music video.” Given Murray’s propensity for showing up in random places, we wouldn’t rule it out. Voices is due February 18 on Republic.
