OFF! Hate on Hippies, Happiness in Brilliant ‘Void You Out’ Video

off!, keith morris, void you out, video

After all of the legal drama and tiresome insults exchanged during the Black Flag vs. FLAG feud, one has to wonder: How does hardcore vet Keith Morris still have the strength to not only lead FLAG, but also front his OFF! supergroup? “The reason I’m in the band is because I don’t know any better,” Morris explains, while cooking himself breakfast, in OFF!’s new music video for recent single “Void You Out.” “I have absolutely no idea what we would be doing if we weren’t playing music. Strangling squirrels up in Griffith Park? Strangling kids at the beach?”

Directed by Jason Farrell, the just-released clip is part documentary, part live show. The short opens with testimonials from Morris, bassist Steven McDonald (choice quote: “I hate hippies almost as much as I hate cops, which is to the max,”), and drummer Mario Rubalcaba (who’s too busy skateboarding to speak in complete sentences), before cutting to a live (and furious) rendition of “Void You Out,” filmed at the Casbah in San Diego on January 29.

Farrell closes the video with a talking-head segment that finds guitarist Dimitri Coats floating in a pool, literally dousing himself in liquor. “Are you happy?” the filmmaker asks, to which Coats responds, “Who gives a crap what I think or who you are?” It’s all pretty amazing.
