Watch Nine Inch Nails Cover Trent Reznor’s Other Band Live in Japan

Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor, How to Destroy Angels, live, Japan, "Ice Age," "BBB," Mariqueen Maandig, Atticus Ross

Trent Reznor has never been much for rules, so why would he follow the unwritten one about not performing songs with one band that you recorded with another? On February 26 in Tokyo, Nine Inch Nails invited Mariqueen Maandig, Reznor’s wife, onstage, to sing a couple of songs from the couple’s project with longtime collaborator Atticus Ross, How to Destroy Angels. The string-dripping “Ice Age,” from last year’s Welcome Oblivion, came back appropriately haunted and Elsa-worthy (above), while the 2010 How to Destroy Angels EP‘s “BBB” (below) curb-threateningly boot-stomped toward the warped rhythms of latter-2013 NIN comeback Hesitation Marks. As Antiquiet points out, Jack White’s three key bands never cover each other, and while Josh Homme’s Queens of the Stone Age covered side band Eagles of Death Metal once in 2008, his supergroup Them Crooked Vultures ruled out covers altogether. On a related note, Reznor recently spoke to The Quietus about his great appreciation for the music of U.K. experimental group Coil, whose 1984 How to Destroy Angels EP gave his non-NIN band its name.
