Carrie Brownstein Trades Bars With Tegan & Sara on ‘Go Forth, Feminist Warriors’

'Go Forth, Feminist Warriors' Rookie Stream Carrie Brownstein Dum Dum Girls

The ever-excellent Rookie Mag has accomplished a helluva feat — they set out to create their very own “We Are the World,” and succeeded handily. The idea initially came to site editor (and SPIN contributor) Jessica Hopper mid-shower, and subsequently grew into “Go Forth, Feminist Warriors,” a proud and playful pro-woman anthem that incorporates new work from (at least) 18 other contributors whose disparate voices unite for a time-honored cause: “Come together and conquer.”

The list includes: Carrie Brownstein, Tegan and Sara, Dee Dee Penny (Dum Dum Girls), Aimee Mann, Ted Leo, Thao Nguyen, Kimya Dawson, MNDR, Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), Kate Nash, Psalm One, Geneviève Castrée (Woelv, Ô PAON), Storey Littleton, Suzy X. (Shady Hawkins, Bitch Magazine), and Rookie‘s Tavi Gevinson. The primary songwriters were Marianna Ritchey and Katy Davidson (a.k.a. Lloyd & Michael), and the whole thing was masterfully mixed and produced by Chad Clark.

Hopper writes that the goal was to channel the unintentional silliness of the ’80s antecedent by creating “a song that also could sound totally and not-at-all serious.” While Brownstein’s pizza freestyle is pretty priceless, but these few lines take the whole pie: “Our body, our choice / Our Tumblr, our voice / Our hearts on our sleeves, our opinions on our blogs. / They mansplainin’ every night and day / But they can’t mansplain our freedom away.” Photo IDs beneath the player.
