Watch Arcade Fire Inject Fallon’s ‘Tonight Show’ With Powerful ‘Afterlife’

Jimmy Fallon’s first, star-studded week as host of The Tonight Show continued on February 20, with appearances by Arcade Fire, Will Ferrell, and the FLOTUS herself, Michelle Obama. Arcade Fire served as musical guest, performing a disco ball-lit rendition of “Afterlife,” a Reflektor standard that first made its debut on Fallon’s former stomping grounds, Saturday Night Live. By now, the indie-rock giants’ live show has become a well-oiled and sparkling machine, and last night’s gig didn’t disappoint — the only added flourish was frontman Win Butler holding a video camera right in front of his face as he sang. For a close-up view of the AF leader, watch the clip above.

Some other highlights from yesterday’s Tonight: Will Ferrell mimed an ice-skating routine to the theme from Downton Abbey, a show he insisted on paying homage to despite never having seen it; and Mrs. Obama tried to educate Ferrell and Fallon about exercise and kale chips in the latest entry of “Ew!”. (The sketch also brought the show’s second Harry Styles shout-out this week.) Catch both of those segments below.

Tonight, Fallon will once again host Justin Timberlake as guest. So far, the new late-night has welcomed U2, Will Smith, Lady Gaga, Kristen Wiig, Tim McGraw, and (in a way) Brian Williams.
