It’s 2014, which means it’s time to wig out at jagbags. Or listen to Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks’ new album Wig Out at Jagbags. One of the two. The Pavement frontman and his long-running band release their follow-up to 2011’s excellent, Beck-produced Mirror Traffic, on January 7 via Matador, but they shared a stream of the whole thing on New Year’s Eve. That includes awesomely allusive “Lariat” and woolly daytripper “Cinnamon and Lesbians.” It also includes “Chartjunk,” which Malk recently told Grantland (via Willamette Week) is “where I inhabit the mind of two prima donnae-sque characters of the NBA, Scott Skiles and Brandon Jennings.”

The currently Berlin-based singer-guitarist has said the album “is inspired by Cologne, Germany, Mark Von Schlegell, Rosemarie Trockel, Von Spar and Jan Lankisch, Can and Gas; Stephen-Malkmus-imagined Weezer/Chili Peppers, Sic Alps, UVA in the late 80’s, NYRB, Aroma Charlottenburg, inactivity, Jamming, Indie guys trying to sound Memphis, Flipper, Pete Townshend, Pavement, The Joggers, The NBA and home life in the 2010s …”
