Hear Phantogram’s Darkly Shreddy ‘Nothing but Trouble’

Phantogram 'Nothing but Trouble' Stream

Phantogram have let slip a third song from their long-awaited second album, Voices. “Nothing but Trouble” is available for immediate download to any who pre-order the February 18 set on iTunes, Amazon, or via the group itself. Singer Sarah Barthel and producer Josh Carter’s latest share continues the promise of early tastes “Fall in Love” and “Black Out Days,” combining haunting vocals with a backing track that melds post-punk shred, the Knife-like weirdness, and trip-hop beatwork. “Ever have the feeling that you’ve constantly been dreaming? This is life,” the song begins — thus far Voices appears to be thematically dark, dealing with paranoia and inner turmoil with a claustrophobic score to match. Which is exactly why it’s one of SPIN’s 50 Albums You Gotta Hear in 2014.
